At
the beginning of the 21st century watching videos on the internet was
a privilege, it was actually more difficult to upload or download.
That's when the site called YouTube was born in 2005. And that same
year, Scotty Cranmer had the brilliant idea of making a channel
and posting his BMX videos. He was 18 years old and had been a
professional Bmxer since he was 15. The inner inspiration was so
complete that when the site came up he invested in equipment, bought
an editing computer and a video camera, started to produce videos
regularly, going beyond fun and producing a very strong publicity,
reaching more than the magazines could. Scotty achieved a level of
success that would be achievable today, and inspiration led him to
increase his posting frequency, and forged the Day in The Life style.
He was being a genius, he wasn't copying anyone, and consequently he
became known all over the world. In Day in The Life he brought the
life of a professional, one day he was competing in the X Games and
the next he was driving sports cars, one day he was producing
cinematographic images and the next day he was playing bike ramping
on the lake. If sports professionalism is a fruit tree of round
apples, Scotty is the guy who climbed the tree in a backpack with
star fame in his pocket.
Between
the 20th and 21st century, the one who reigned in Bmx was the pilot
Dave Mirra. A classic Bmxer from the time when the tracks are vacant
lots, where young people go with shovels and buckets of water and are
building a ramp, in an infinite work of assembly and dismantling.
They are so committed in this sense that if it rains, they go to the
track in the rain, and take advantage of all that water coming from
the skies to shape the earth and build a ramp. Until they finally
have fun with bike tricks. And at the time the Bike gave maneuvers
known as Superman or 360. They have evolved so much that Bmxers ride
on the Vertical, Bmxers ride on the Street, Bmxers ride on the Park.
Dave Mirra was to Bmx what Tony Hawk was to Skate, including
the production of a prestigious game called Dave Mirra Freestyle Bmx.
Everyone who started Bmx had to get to know Mirra and have a
reference icon to whom they could be inspired and understand the
maneuvers, learn to ride a bike. Here is a professional who was
fundamental in the history of this sport.
Something
very incredible in Cranmer's story was that he started in Bmx
inspired by Mirra, and years later he came alongside his idol in
competitions. Come on, losing to the idol is incredible. Winning your
own idol is amazing. But simply competing with one's own idol is in
itself really quite amazing. My dears, we're talking about getting in
the race everything you've ever wanted. The recognition was in a
media of international reach, and when recapitulating the dreams come
true, we have to conceive that the described journey was one of
pioneering spirit and brilliance.
To this day, daily videos are posted on Scotty Cranmer's
channel, which is sponsored by Vans and Monster Energy Drink. More
than 15 years ago the first videos came with a lot of maneuvering and
a lot of fun, a jovial style very American Pie with Jackass and bike.
You can find images from the time and sadly many old images don't. As
a competitor he went through a series of sponsorships such as Vans,
Fox, Hyper Bikes, Pro-Tec Helmets, Snafu, Monster and is among the
biggest X Games medalists, having even won many other important
championships such as the respected Dew Tour.
On
a BMX dominance scale, Cranmer would be the ceiling. The evolution of
the bike is slow and difficult because it is dangerous, the bike
would be a very big and heavy board, and it works with a lot of
strength and speed requiring a lot of space. In other words, the bike
is not content with a small court. All these circumstances make
evolution slower. On the other hand, the new generations arrive
viewing videos with routes covered, so they know what to do, where to
train, who to be inspired by, the scale of maneuvers to go through.
In this sense it is visible in the sport of Bmx that the next
generation is better than the previous one, and so on.
Looking at Cranmer's career and how it was forerunner is
like taking a race car and adding performance-enhancing parts. He
enters the sport and professionalizes with the prominence of a star
among stars, and through home production he manages to feed the
promotion regularly. It is precisely because of his intelligence and
level that he is very important in the history of the sport.
A
difficult moment in the history of bmx was on the 4th of February
2016, around 4:00am, Dave Mirra passed away at the age of 41. An
alleged suicide in his hometown of Greenville, North Carolina. The
day followed with Cranmer's shock upon receiving the news at a hotel
where he was preparing for a competition. He immediately recorded a
video message saying he couldn't believe it.
At
first it is very difficult to conceive that an idol worthy of Olympus
could have consciously signed the ending itself. And it's a level
where his image is worth gold and sells everything from turnstiles to
stickers, you live peacefully under the superior and conscious gaze
of God. Eventually this ending is like a possible history writing.
Under exemplary factors and circumstances we continue to live life
normally, crossing the street without waiting all the time for the
worst to happen. The significance of the loss of Bmxer Dave Mirra was
truly great. And if there is any reason coming from extra intellects
that express a divine action, such as the thought that permeates a
thousand generations and moves, through centuries, mountains in
geographical changes, there must be a purpose of scope in which the
scale of the galaxy justifies, pair in the diamond matrix of
terrestrial intelligence, a loss on the human scale, not allowing one
of the greatest journeys to be thrown into the void, but to be placed
in the sky.
And
in the same year 2016, in October, Scotty Cranmer has an accident.
And there are no words to express the fact.
The
accident affected Scotty but did not end his career. Day In the Life
followed up with recovery, where he often says he would recover soon
and would be riding his bike. The recovery continues with numerous
records such as the helmet issue. Due to the surgery he was forbidden
to wear a cap and helmet for some time. He also describes that as he
walked around the hospital in a wheelchair, children passing by
looked at him as if he were a monster out of a horror movie. Whatever
was going on in his thoughts, funny or not, it was happening. So
Scotty Cranmer comes home and goes through a long recovery being
greatly supported by social media. As he went through the stages of
his recovery, something incredible submerged: Scotty had the gift of
perfect balance! Soon he was walking again and soon he was riding a
bicycle again. When he gets on the bike today, an aspect of dominance
is visible. The gift of the bike is something natural like a visible
internal light! He could spend years off the bike and one fine day
hop on top and backflip those skills inside him.
The
videos on Youtube continued, he set up a Bike Shop and kept riding,
no longer professionally. There is a lot of Bmx, Speed and Downhill
bike rides, the bike connection continues daily.
And
do I need to say that we here in the countryside of Brazil dreamed of
having a computer with internet to be able to watch this Scotty
Cranmer? Because I would go to school and come back to friends'
houses, everyone would sit in front of a monitor and watch this guy's
rides. We used to cycle around the city and the inspiration was
this:
-
Is there someone who runs the 360 maneuver?
-
Dude, Scotty Cranmer!
Are you on?
